If you’ve clicked on this page, I’m going to assume that you’re either new to The Facts of Steampunk Life community, or else you’re new to the concept of steampunk in general. Either way, you’d like more information. So here is some general information, as well as the answers to some frequently asked questions. If you have a question that isn’t answered below, send an email to factsofsteampunklife@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to answer it.
For those of you new to steampunk in general...
In the first place, bravo! You’re obviously a person who likes to learn about and explore new ideas, and that’s always a good thing. And if you’re curious and attracted to steampunk, that means you’ve probably got an adventurous and spunky streak too.
But in the second place, there’s a chance that you may be confused—maybe even a little weirded out—by a genre/trend/style/subculture that seems simultaneously old-fashioned and futuristic, historical and yet otherworldly, distinct and yet flexible and indefinable. If that’s the case, let me try to help you out a little.
What in the world is steampunk, anyway?
Well, as I said and you’ve probably noticed, it’s not the easiest thing in the world to define, but here’s one way to look at it: put yourself in the Victorian Era and imagine everything it entails—the ideas, values, styles, designs, technology, food, social customs, etc. Now try to imagine what science fiction would have looked like to someone from that world. If you come up with something along the lines of Jules Verne, you’re on the right track. (Even though Jules Verne’s works were considered science fiction when he wrote them, they are today considered fundamental classics of steampunk literature.) That explanation may be a bit over-simplified, but it’s a good place to start, anyway.
You don’t have to confine yourself to the actual Victorian Era, though. History repeats itself, after all. If you prefer, imagine that Earth’s society has cycled around to once again enter an era of Victorian-esque values, customs, and styles. Or create a completely alternate universe where history was totally different, and just incorporate a few Victorian elements. That’s part of the beauty of steampunk—there are no rules! (See the “What are the Facts?” page.)
Where did the term “Steampunk” come from?
In the Victorian Era, steam was a primary source of power in developed countries, and therefore an important element of their society. (Gas was also used, mostly for lighting in homes and streetlamps, hence the occasional use of genre terminology such as “Gaslight Romance” or “Gaslight Mystery”.) The “punk” aspect really speaks for itself through the futuristic and unconventional elements of the genre and style. Think “Victorian with attitude.”
What is the steampunk life?
Once again, check out the “What are the Facts?” page. The steampunk life is whatever you want it to be! It can be decorating your home with a Victorian flare. It can be reading steampunk literature while having tea and scones. It can be infusing a little Victorian style into your wardrobe, or giving a Victorian wardrobe a little bit of kick and punkish attitude. It can be going all out and making a bold statement, or keeping it subtle and understated.
The most important thing to remember is that steampunk is about being creative and having fun.
Steampunk is a learn-as-you-go lifestyle. Getting a thorough understanding of what the term even means is a process that might take some time. Don’t rush yourself. Don’t feel like you aren’t a true steampunker if you can’t define it in one simple sentence (don’t worry—none of us can), and don’t think you have to stick with one strict, narrow definition or follow a specific set of rules. Make your steampunk lifestyle your own!
